For some time now I've been aware of the Darlington Media Group's production Beauty and the Bike, which is to have its premier on the 9th of December in Darlington in the UK. In this project, investigating why it is that British teenage girls don't cycle in the same way as their German counterparts do, a group of British girls from Darlington were taken to Bremen in Germany. This is a short clip from a longer documentary called Beauty and the Bike which explores why girls in England stop riding their bicycles. I found it pretty awesome. It seems that whenever European cycling is mentioned in America everyone gets in a huff about one of a number of things (helmet use, cycle tracks, etc etc). I am sure that our future is on the bicycle, I am not sure our future is following the European Model (Capitial E Capital M!), but we could learn some things from the Europeans.

As a husband and dad of a trio of cycling beauties this little film really appealed. It also shows what can be done with a little bit of enthusiasm, commitment and some simple easy measures to turn the UK into a decent place to live in. As American (yes! American!) broadcaster, Bill Nye, once said: "Bicycling is part... of the future. It has to be. There is something seriously wrong with a nation that drives a car to the gym". And, of course, that particularly topical quote from H.G Wells: "Every time I see an adult on a bicycle I have hope for the human race". ...

Why don't teenage girls cycle? This is a discussion I have many times since I started the blog. Its seems to be combination of safety fears and most importantly is just not being 'cool'. Although for the slightly older age group of ladies in their 20's/30's, it has very much become cool it seems teenage girls are a harder nut to crack.
